Introduction

The idea of building a refuge close to the Traversella rock climbing site came to a small group of resourceful and keen friends from the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) in Ivrea, among them Luigi Giachetto, Guido Accotto and Bruno Piazza.

Towards the end of the 80s, they chose an old and empty alpine hut and renovation work started in 1989. In the meantime, the initial idea of calling it Refuge “Balma Bianca” was abandoned due to the death of Bruno Piazza during an excursion. Bruno was one of the main instigators behind the project, so the refuge was named after him
.

Ever since 1992 (the inauguration year), the “Piazza” refuge (of the Ivrea Italian Alpine Club branch) has become a popular destination for climbers and people looking for peace and tranquillity.
